Children as Leaders: Voices of the Future

At Kirkstall Valley Primary, we believe that leadership is not just for adults. We are committed to empowering our children to find their voice, take responsibility, and shape the direction of our school.

Our leadership roles give pupils the Courage to stand up for what they believe in, the Compassion to support their peers, and the Commitment to make our school—and our planet—a better place.

School Council

Democracy in Action Elected democratically by their peers, our School Councillors are the voice of the classroom. They meet regularly with senior leaders to discuss school improvement, organise fundraising events, and make decisions on how to improve our playground and learning environments. They learn that their opinion matters and that they have the power to effect change.

MindMate Leaders (Wellbeing)

Champions of Compassion Our MindMate Leaders are the heartbeat of our pastoral care. Wearing their badges with pride, they are trained to spot children who may be feeling lonely or worried on the playground. They lead peer-to-peer support, help run wellbeing activities, and ensure that every child at Kirkstall Valley feels they have a friend to talk to.

Oracy Leaders

Finding Our Voice As a Voice 21 school, we value the power of talk. Our Oracy Leaders are champions of communication. They support the development of speaking and listening across the school, model how to speak in full sentences, and help facilitate debates and public speaking events. They ensure that every child has the confidence to speak up and be heard.

Digital Leaders

Creators & Protectors Our Digital Leaders are the experts in our computing curriculum. They assist teachers during lessons, help look after our iPads and laptops, and champion Online Safety. They lead assemblies on how to stay safe on the internet, ensuring their peers are responsible digital citizens who create, rather than just consume.

Sustainability Leaders

Protectors of the Planet Driven by our value of Commitment, these leaders are passionate about the environment. They monitor energy usage in school, lead recycling initiatives, and help us work towards our Eco-Schools status. They challenge us to think about our carbon footprint and how we can protect the natural world for the future.

The Librarians

Guardians of Stories We believe reading is the master key to learning. Our student Librarians look after our school library, keeping it organised and inviting. They recommend books to younger children, read stories to EYFS pupils at lunchtime, and help select new titles to ensure our library reflects the diversity of our community.

Arts Leaders

Inspiring Creativity Our Arts Leaders celebrate creativity in all its forms. They help to organise school galleries, manage resources for art lessons, and support the planning of school productions and musical events. They ensure that the arts remain a vibrant, visible part of life at Kirkstall Valley.

Nature Club

Guardians of the Grounds Our Nature Club leaders take responsibility for our outdoor learning environments. They look after the school garden, monitor local wildlife, and ensure our grounds remain a haven for biodiversity. They teach us that nature is not just something to visit, but something to care for.
